Veterinary Technician

About the Role

At Sun Valley Hope Animal Hospital, we provide compassionate and high-quality care to our furry patients and exceptional service to their owners. We are seeking a friendly, organized, and detail-oriented Veterinary Technician who is dedicated to providing exceptional care for animals, educating clients, and supporting the veterinary team in all aspects of clinical practice. 

 

As a Veterinary Techncian, you will be a key member of the veterinary healthcare team, responsible for performing clinical and diagnostic procedures, assisting veterinarians in patient care, and ensuring the overall smooth operation of the veterinary clinic. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

 

1. Clinical Support & Patient Care  

  • Assist in Physical Exams: Support veterinarians during patient examinations by restraining animals, preparing equipment, and recording clinical findings.  

  • Administer Treatments: Administer prescribed medications (oral, injectable, topical) as directed by the veterinarian. Assist with the preparation and administration of vaccines and preventative treatments.  

  • Surgical Assistance: Prepare animals and equipment for surgery, monitor anesthesia, and assist the veterinarian during surgical procedures. Provide post-surgical care, including pain management and recovery monitoring.  

  • Diagnostic Testing: Perform diagnostic tests, including blood draws, urine collection, fecal tests, and prepare samples for analysis. Assist in laboratory procedures such as blood smears, cytology, and urinalysis.  

  • Radiography: Operate radiographic equipment to capture diagnostic images (x-rays), process them, and ensure safety protocols are followed. 

  • Dental Care: Assist in routine dental procedures, including cleanings, extractions, and oral health assessments.  

  • Emergency Care: Provide assistance during emergency and critical care situations by monitoring vital signs, performing CPR, and aiding in life-saving procedures. 

 2. Client Communication & Education  

  • Client Interaction: Communicate with pet owners regarding their pets' condition, treatment plans, and follow-up care. Provide clear instructions on administering medications, dietary recommendations, and lifestyle changes.  

  • Client Education: Educate clients on topics such as preventive healthcare (vaccinations, parasite control), behavior, and wellness, ensuring they understand the importance of regular veterinary visits.  

  • Discharge Instructions: Provide clients with clear discharge instructions for home care, including medication schedules, wound care, and activity restrictions for post-operative pets.  

3. Laboratory and Diagnostic Support  

  • Laboratory Work: Conduct in-house laboratory tests, including blood work, urinalysis, and fecal examinations. Prepare samples for external laboratory testing when necessary.  

  • Microbiology & Parasitology: Identify and assess parasites, bacteria, fungi, or viruses using a microscope and assist in diagnosis and treatment planning.  

  • Blood Collection & Sample Preparation: Draw blood, take biopsies, and collect other diagnostic samples as necessary for testing or analysis.   

4. Anesthesia & Pain Management: 

  • Anesthesia Monitoring: Prepare animals for surgery or diagnostic procedures requiring anesthesia. Monitor vital signs (heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, etc.) during anesthesia and recovery.  

  • Pain Management: Administer analgesics as directed by the veterinarian and monitor animals for pain relief. Ensure post-operative comfort and manage pain effectively.  

 5. Clinic Management & Administration  

  • Inventory Management: Track and manage medical supplies and medications. Ensure that necessary medications, equipment, and materials are available and stored safely.  

  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic and paper records, including patient medical histories, progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge information.  

  • Laboratory & Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and clean laboratory equipment, diagnostic tools, and surgical instruments to ensure they are in good working condition. 6. Team Collaboration & Professional Development  

  • Team Support: Work collaboratively with veterinarians, veterinary assistants, and other staff to ensure smooth patient care. Provide guidance and support to less-experienced team members.  

  • Continuing Education: Stay up-to-date with advancements in veterinary technology, treatment methods, and regulatory changes. Participate in training, workshops, or conferences to maintain certification and enhance professional skills.
